The Distributed Design Awards are a celebration of creative, innovative, and responsible design that addresses the evolving post-industrial design paradigm. This prestigious recognition aims to spotlight multidisciplinary, sustainable, and mind-shifting design projects from Europe’s most talented makers, designers, and creatives.
Projects should incorporate the wellbeing of both end-users and potential co-producers. Designs should consider socioeconomic business models, regenerative systems, and other frameworks that foster co-creation.
Projects must adhere to principles of open-source design and transparency, enabling adaptation and customization by users.
Designs should emphasize local production, smart manufacturing, responsible material use, convivial tool making, and thoughtful consideration of product lifecycle and afterlife.
The Distributed Design Awards are open to all professionals working in creative disciplines that intersect with design and making. This includes, but is not limited to, creatives, makers, designers, artists, architects, scientists, students. We strongly promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, inviting everyone with Europe-based projects to participate, regardless of origin, ethnicity, creed, culture, gender identification, or religious background. The awards adopt a broad definition of ‘emerging creatives’ to include designers, makers, and practitioners who apply the Distributed Design concept to various applications. This can include platforms, deployments, products, and services. Participation is open to individuals from any background or experience level, independent of current academic involvement. This year’s jury comprises international distributed design experts, representing 20 high-profile cultural and design institutions. The initiative is organized by Distributed Design, co-funded by the European Union, and supported by Fab Lab Barcelona, WASP (World’s Advanced Saving Project), Kniterate, and Smart Citizen.
