In February 2024, the European Training Foundation (ETF) released Crafting the Future: Five Squared [5²], a study authored by ETF experts Floriana Folisi, Francesca Rosso and Manuele Prina. This comprehensive exploration delves into the intricate world of craftsmanship, shedding light on its multifaceted role and significance in shaping the future. The drafting of this study saw the collaboration of esteemed partner organizations such as the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, Union for the Mediterranean, UNESCO and UNIDO.
The study’s focal points include recognizing handmade goods as precious treasures, understanding the pivotal role of crafts innovation and deciphering how crafts can intricately shape the landscapes of the future. Craftsmanship emerges as a fundamental sector contributing to the cultural, social, environmental and economic development of nations globally.
The study presents a forward-looking perspective, outlining actionable steps and key priorities until 2050, along with recommendations and short, medium, and long-term objectives. It becomes evident that craftsmanship is not just a tradition, on the contrary it’s a living force that continues to shape our world and that illuminates the way forward in our rapidly changing world.
