MEET THE MAKER
My name is Ronan and this year i started my own business as a fine furniture designer and maker. 2 years ago i quite my previous career as a video producer to study for 1 year in a fine furniture school and start my own business. I create high quality bespoke pieces of furniture from British and Irish timber.
WHAT ARE YOUR FEEDBACKS?
Before starting the course i had educated myself in design and making and the creative side of my craft, however i had no experience about starting or running my own business. I hoped to start and maintain a profitable business doing what i love in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. Over the last 4 months the Crafting Business Programme taught me how to organise and run my business, it taught me exactly what i need to do in order to market my business, manage my finance, and develop my designs. Prior to taking part in the course i had done my own business plan. It was vague and not very objective lead. As part of the course i wrote another but this time it was succinct, i was able to identify my target audience, and create achievable objectives that work towards my overall goal.
FIVE THINGS YOU’LL BRING WITH YOU FROM THE EXPERIENCE:
- Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
- Break down your objectives into black and white tasks.
- Don’t be afraid to pay people to do the work you don’t enjoy. Your time is worth money as well.
- Reach out to other makers as much as possible, you will learn a lot.
- Be patient, it will take time to reach success.
