MEET THE MAKER
Ming Design Studio Founded in Amsterdam by industrial designers Zhiya (Yona) Huang and Mingshuo Zhang, who both graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven. Fascinated by the eastern and western narrative beauty of craftsmanship and the power of industry, the Studio merges innovation and human touch into hands-on experiment, finding meaning and emotional connection within and through daily objects. With years of experience working with different industries and deep appreciation for craftsmanship, they have been experimenting and designing cross different category including furniture design, accessory object design, installation to technology product innovation and so on.
Project
Infinity Filigree by Eva van Kempen and Ming Design Studio is an attempt to innovate and safe-guard the dying skill of filigree, one of the oldest and most complex gold-smith techniques. While honouring its meditative aspects, the aim is to make this labour-intensive technique more accessible to designers, makers, hobbyists, as well as consumers. Presented are a 3D printed tool that simplifies the making of a specific filigree pattern, and contemporary earrings made with this tool.

It’s a great possibility to research the tradition of filigree and create tools and products that better accommodate to the modern market with use of contemporary digital techniques and 3d printed tools. Filigree is a beautiful technique and has a rich heritage tradition in goldsmithing throughout different cultures and times.
