MEET THE MAKER
FROM: Carlow/Dublin
PROFESSION: Milliner/Accessory designer
BUSINESS/COMPANY/PRACTICE NAME: Laura Kinsella (Millinery)
I am primarily a milliner, who has recently cross-skilled, learning the hand craft and design techniques of varying other areas of accessory design.
My work is created entirely by hand using traditional millinery techniques which I have taken and absorbed into the creation of my own unique techniques. The work generally tends to concentrate and focus on each piece as a collective textile development and a stand alone structure whilst then also allowing it to be a considered piece of design which is then wearable art.
I believe that my work speaks of something that is abstract and innovative, reminiscent of work from old masters, to products of our time, a blended display of traditional hand craft, design and even art.
My trademark ethics and brand is to always be guided from the great traditions and crafts of the past but to constantly look forward and look at each new prospect as a challenge to create some- thing forward thinking and evolving for the world in which we want to live in.
I chose to attend iAtelier because this type of collaborative process is immensely beneficial to a craft/design brand like mine. In my mind it is extremely valuable to work closely with another creative with different experiences and knowledge, yet wanting the same outcome and likewise to be mentored and guided by professionals of the same background. All involved engaging in a unique symbiotic experience.
In my opinion, accessories are of all the crafts one of the most fundamental categories of objects that can sit so perfectly in the middle of the Venn diagram of the craft, design and the technological world, making it a perfect fit for iAtelier.
