AN EXTRACT FROM THE CASE STUDY FOR CRAFTING EUROPE
I figured out the Salone del Mobile fair is a very commercial event, whereas the more artistic Fuorisalone is way less focused on direct salesmanship and more for press and networking. At the Salone del Mobile it is the place where manufacturers and designers meet and deals are sealed on the spot and also companies that present here come from all over the world. It is at this fair where I had meetings whit several manufacturers, amongst them weaving companies and companies oriented at acoustics. As part of Fuorisalone I spoke with both start-ups and established design studio’s to exchange experiences and to get a sense of the pro’s and con’s of exhibiting here. The companies presenting here were based in Europe mostly.
I found Milan Design Week is the right place to present a combination of material research and innovation alongside the actual product and that this would even be very refreshing and outstanding since a lot of work presented there consists of quite traditional pieces of furniture. I have a selection of three initiatives that could be suitable to exhibit with in the future. One of those is the Salone Satellite, which is a smaller part of the big Salone del Mobile fair. It is the place where start-ups find their manufacturers and vice versa. It is a large fair presenting a wide range of design disciplines, all mixed through the space. Although it is focused to have manufacturers and start-ups get connected, the audience still is quite broad.
It would definitely be my recommendation to first visit the design week before you commit to it as an exhibitor. I discovered it’s very helpful to go to openings to network but also to get the latest updates on all the events happening. Some of them are invite-only, so I learned that I need to sign in or connect up front next time.
