AN EXTRACT FROM THE CASE STUDY FOR CRAFTING EUROPE
The location of NY NOW is great and it is easily accessible. The area is quite popular. Food and shopping are a short walk away. The Javits Centre, where NY NOW was being held is a big reputable building that all New Yorkers know about. Therefore it was easy to find and the registration went smoothly. The trade fair representatives were helpful and there was signage to guide attendees to the right place.
NY NOW had exhibits ranging from homeware and clothing to stationary, baby products, baskets, candles, tea, ceramics, Christmas decorations and much more. There was a mix of small independent designers and big companies. A few businesses were niche for example organic tea flavours, guitar string jewellery, plant food and social enterprises that up-cycle waste materials to make beautiful dolls and a UN Refugee agency that sells refugee-made products internationally.
I wouldn’t exhibit at NY NOW because the attendees and buyers do not meet the criteria of my target market, which is high end boutique stores that value luxury and craft. I felt New York was very expensive and I would have to make big sales to compensate for the air travel, accommodation, food and booth charges. I could not find many exhibitors that I could identify as a competitor which means that NY NOW does not appeal to my type of business models, size and stature.
USA is a great market for luxury items and with proper research and planning I see myself exporting there in the future. The Go and See voucher gave me the opportunity to experience first hand what the trade show would be like and what the buyers were looking for in terms of quantities and shipment e.t.c.
This research trip has been extremely beneficial for me because I realised that I am ready to export. Although I need to do some more research about my target market first. I learnt that it is important to have a friendly demeanour and to stay relaxed and let the buyers approach you with questions or orders. I saw that having a good visual display of products is extremely essential for drawing in more people towards to the booth. I learnt that exporting is a big next step but it is achievable with planning and research.
