The project partners of the Creative Europe project ‘Crafting Europe’, are delighted to announce our first ‘Crafting Business Seminar’. Crafting Business is a professional practice training programme that was organised and delivered in 2020 and 2021 as part of the project. This programme aimed to share expertise and knowledge to support the business development of newcomers to the industry. Crafting Business focused on building business skills, generating revenue, and supporting marketing and promotion in craft micro-enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Join us on the 22nd and 23rd February 2021, 10am-12.50pm (GMT/Ireland/UK/Portugal) to find out more about the Crafting Business programme and to hear from the participants and tutors involved about their experiences.
By using the Crafting Business programme to learn about the fundamentals of business, new craft professionals can gain skills that will strengthen their business performance. In this online seminar, we aim not only to reflect on the programme to date, but to also inspire other craft professionals and makers to apply these tools to their own businesses.

Ireland
Gillian Barry, Head of Innovation & Enterprise, LIT
Gillian Barry is an experienced Business Professional, Educator, Board Director and Chairperson with over 22 years’ experience and leads the LIT Enterprise & Innovation team. LIT has the most extensive portfolio of enterprise centres in Ireland. Gillian and her team support around 100 new entrepreneurs annually through various startup programmes & initiatives, resulting in the creation of ~ 1,000 direct jobs since 2007 accounting for ~€102m in economic impact each year. These programmes include the National Entrepreneur Development Programme called New Frontiers run regionally by LIT for innovative startups and Crafting Business in collaboration with Design Craft Council Ireland (DCCI) and partners across Europe. She is involved in various boards and committees working to support regional and national economic development, is Co-Director of Startup Grind Limerick and has contributed to national policy on entrepreneurship in Ireland. She has a first-class Executive MBA from UCC and is in her second year of a Professional Doctorate in Business (DBA).
Noel Donnellan, co-founder of PIGMENTTI
Noel Donnellan started his artisan vocation in 2003, at the renowned Institut Supérior de Peinture Van Der Kelen et Logelain academy in Brussels. He continued his studies at Ecole d’Art Mural de Versailles in Paris and has the unique distinction of being the first Irish person to study at both. He has since collaborated with internationally acclaimed interior designers and architects. As a former mechanical design engineer, he brings his technical knowledge to his craft, namely CAD (computer aided design). He thrives on variety and the limitless range of possibilities in his creations. He sees the potential for transformation in every room however understated or dramatic.
PIGMENTTI was founded in 2018 by Paolo Bello (Italian) & Noel Donnellan (Irish). The company is in early growth & development stage. PIGMENTTI is a multi-skilled decorative artist studio specialising in bas-relief sculpture, trompe l’oeil murals, painted decoration, gilding and gold leaf. They exhibited at Decorex in 2018 & 2019 and have secured projects for luxury interior designers. They were selected to exhibit at Homo Faber and are launching their own art in 2021. Described as Master artisans bringing traditional techniques to the contemporary world, Noel and Paolo’s knowledge and expertise in the decorative arts have allowed them to create bespoke work for modern luxury spaces, and to restore historic buildings across the world.
Malú Colorín
Malú Colorín is a Mexican natural dyer and designer living in Ireland. She inherited her name and a calling for textile art from her mother and grandmother. With a background in graphic design and fine arts, in 2018 she began her experimentations and research into natural dyes. Alongside her self-guided learning, she has also participated in workshops with the Bii-Daüü collective, Raúl Pontón Zúñiga and Anabel Torres.
Her work draws inspiration from the traditional garments of her native Mexico, while embracing the rich heritage of Irish textiles. By working slowly and mindfully, she aims to build an intimate connection with each of her dye sources, as well as the land where they grow. In 2020 she was selected to participate in Crafting Europe’s first Crafting Business programme in Ireland, organised by the DCCI and LIT. Her first naturally-dyed capsule collection of linen garments and accessories will be launched in 2021.
Spain
Laura Miguel Baumann, Fundesarte, Spain
Laura holds a degree in Translation and Interpretation by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. She has completed her studies by several master’s degrees in international Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid; International Business Administration; and, Intercultural Communication and European Studies. She has been working for the private sector as well as for non-profit organizations and public bodies, mainly in Spain but also in foreign countries as Serbia, Belgium and Germany. Currently, she is in charge of Fundesarte, the department of crafts promotion at EOI (School of Industrial Organization, under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain). For more than 12 years she has been managing cultural projects related to crafts
and carries out tasks to promote Spanish crafts through various activities, as the Spanish National Craft Awards, international exhibitions on crafts, the European Craft Days in Spain. She directed also the Master on Crafts Management, Design and Craft Skills at EOI. Laura is currently vice-president of WCC-Europe.
Ana Illueca
Ana Illueca is a ceramist with a studio in Valencia. She makes pieces that defend the Mediterranean culture and is currently working to internationalise her practice. She is a teacher at different universities and a cultural curator always working in the direction of creativity and ceramics.
Santiago Besteiro
Santiago is the manager of the Santiago Besteiro workshop. He lives in a rural area of 14 inhabitants in Galicia, northwestern Spain. When he finished his studies in Fine Arts and Design he decided to start a business where he could invest his time doing what he’s passionate about. Santiago Besteiro is a creation and research artisan workshop, whose main objective is to explore the aesthetic and material possibilities of leather in combination with wood and stone.
Netherlands
Marion Poortvliet, Crafts Council Nederland
Marion Poortvliet is founder and director of Crafts Council Nederland, the platform for artistic crafts where heritage and innovation unite and where craftsmanship is nurtured and passed on in an innovative way to new generations.
Marion is trained as a designer at the fashion department of ArtEZ University of the Arts and educated as a social entrepreneur at the University of Amsterdam. She is associated as a lecturer and educational developer at the Utrecht University of the Arts.
Marion Beltman, programme lead
Driven by her mission to make artists, creatives and cultural institutions a little more effective every day, Marion helps them realize a valuable strategy, targeted marketing, coherent business plans and meaningful funding applications. She guides her students in tackling these issues based on her extensive experience.
Veronica Pock
Veronica Pock is a weaver. Her hand-woven textiles are all unique. The resulting woven products, scarves, home accessories and art pieces, have integrity and honesty, depth and character.
Fenna van der Klei
Designer Fenna van der Klei reinterprets traditional techniques and uses them to create new, sensory products and installations. With her products she aims to provide more warmth to the living environment and tempts the user to connect with it. A good example of the reinterpretation is her research into new types of weaving.
Georgia
Maka Dvalishvili, Project Partner
Maka Dvalishvili has been the founder and executive director of Georgian Arts & Culture Center since 1995 and the founder of Georgian Traditional Crafts Association. She operates as Europa Nostra representative in Georgia. Ms. Dvalishvili is program leader of the GACC ongoing programs – Cultural Industries and Crafts Development program, Museum Support, international initiative of Georgian Cultural Studies, Preservation of Georgian cultural heritage; She has been running trainings and workshops for Crafts Sector in product development and marketing, crafts business development, export/import regulations, copyrights and trademarks as well as establishing and operating crafts based social enterprises and associations; Ms. Dvalishvili’s experience includes provision of studies sector and organization of conferences, symposiums, Tbilisi international summit of Crafts and design EthnoFest 2016, 2018, etc. Europa Nostra operations in Georgia. Ms. Dvalishvili is a World Crafts Council-Europe member and leads activities related to the accredited NGO of ICH, UNESCO.
David Chechelashvili, Tutor
David Chechelashvili is a strategy oriented, creative & experienced high tech entrepreneur, technology commercialization expert, startup mentor & 3D/VR technology evangelist with unique technical background and expertise in 3D/stereo and emerging VR field, encompassing strategic product management and market planning, OEM partnership development & technology commercialization with the ability and skill set to provide creative, innovative, enthusiastic and forward-thinking leadership in a team environment. He possesses proven ability to drive record-high marketing campaign response rates and execute successful new product launches.
Mr. Chechelashvili has founded 5 global start-ups. He is currently participating in development of start-up ecosystem by teaching at Ilia State University in Tbilisi.
Matassi Sulakauri, Participant
Matassi Sulakauri is a graphic designer and has 6-year experience in marketing field (advertising) as senior art director. She has been working as a clothes designer as well as in ceramics and wood work. Her recent passion is calligraphy and has held a workshop on the subject.
Teona Gorgiashvili, Participant
Teona Gorgiashvili, 33 years old, has graduated from Ilia Chavchavadze State University and has a master’s degree in International Relations. She works at BP’s subcontractor company from 2010 –till present. Teona took up ceramic basics 5 years ago and now she is a professional pottery artist. She owns her online ceramic shop “Teio Ceramics” on social media Facebook and Instagram and on biggest online shopping platform Etsy.com.

Italy
Elisa Guidi, programme lead
Elisa Guidi is an Architect, she studied in Florence and in Paris, University of Architecture Paris – La Villette. She graduated with a dissertation concerning “The restoration of historical buildings in France”. She has worked since 1996 for Artex, Center for Artistic and Traditional Crafts for Tuscany, and has worked on projects concerning the link between artistic crafts and cultural heritage, and restoration of artworks. In 1999 she became the manager of the Research and Development sector of Artex, developing projects concerning innovation in crafts: shape innovation; market innovation; new formal trends and new consumers’ behavior. Since 2004, Elisa is the General Coordinator of projects for Artex. Elisa also worked for the University of Florence as a Contract Professor in Conservation of Ancient Building. In 2016, Elisa became a member of the board of the Foundation MIC – International Museum of Ceramics – onlus in Faenza.
Maria Elena Angeli – Tutor
Graduated in Economics in Florence, Maria Elena Angeli works in Artex following two specific activities: finance, open calls and grants, and internationalization processes suitable for micro and small artisan enterprises. A training that after university continued in the field, with many trips made to get to know foreign markets and their rules in depth. Maria Elena has built bridges through which Italian companies have exported their goods. The United States, Japan, South Korea, India, South Africa and China are some of the markets that she has explored. For the Crafting Business Italian Webinar Series she held three online lessons on marketing, digital B2B, internationalization process, open call and grants for micro SMEs, with a core focus on the Italian (post) Covid-19 situation.

Agnes Duerrschnabel – Participant
Agnes Duerrschnabel is a ceramics designer and trainer. In 2013 she opened her own studio in Como, in the building of the ancient monastery Santa Margherita. “As a curious person I am interested in many things; I studied different items, lived in different places and did different jobs. I was born in Göppingen, Germany and brought up near Ulm. In 1987 I moved to Como, with my Italian husband and our little daughter. Since 2007 we live in Faggeto Lario, a small village on the Lake, in a special place you cannot reach by car, which makes life less easy but much more romantic! Having always been fond of languages and literature, after my arrival in Italy I took a Foreign Literature Course at the Università degli Studi of Milan. For more than 30 years I’ve been working as an interpreter and sworn translator of the Court of Como. Since 1985 I am also really passionate about design and arts, so once my grown up daughter had left home, from 2007 to 2012 I went back to Germany to take a degree course at the National Institute for Ceramics Design of Höhr-Grenzhausen, achieving the qualification of a ceramics designer and trainer.”

Cristina Mariani
“I am a textile artist specializing in contemporary tapestry, with experience in hand weaving and jacquard, embroidery, natural dyeing and shibori. I collaborate with museums and galleries exhibiting my works in Italy and abroad, for about a year also with the Jil Sander fashion house for the creation of prototypes and unique or limited series pieces. I teach tapestry and weaving courses. I continuously deepen the textile culture in every aspect, from the artisan and technical-design to the artistic and anthropological one.”

Ukraine
Elizabeth Miroshnichenko, Handicraft Chamber of Ukraine (HCU)
In 2016, Elizabeth Miroshnichenko was appointed General Secretary of the Handicraft Chamber of Ukraine (HCU), where she has been working since 2008. In 2009, thanks to the support of the President of Ukraine, Elizabeth has joined a team of reformers to reshape the Ukrainian craft sector. Until 2015, she has also led a team cooperating with the State Committee for Entrepreneurship and with the Cabinet of Ministers, thus becoming co-author of reform measures in the development of an Action Plan for the development of crafts in Ukraine, which was approved by the Government of Ukraine, as well as becoming co-author of a Draft Law concept on Crafts Activity and of the draft Law proper. Since 2010, Elizabeth has been participating in international working groups of the Germany-based Hanseatic Parliament, a network that HCU has eventually become a member of. Moreover, she was also authorised to establish dialogue and interaction with UEAPME (now ‘SMEunited’) in Brussels, an organisation officially recognised as social partner of the European Commission.
Olena Kirianova, Tutor
Assosiated professor, PhD, Head of the Information and Resource Center in Private Higher educational institution «International Management Institute (MIM-Kyiv)». Authored more than 40 publications on HR management, personal effectiveness, labor market and youth employment, and text books as well. Expert in conflictology. Has more than 16 years of teaching, training and consulting experience in the private and public sector.
Yuliia Yalanzhy
Yuliia was born in Odesa, now she is living and working in Kyiv where she has developed her own unique technology to create her individual decoration objects made from natural materials such as ceramics and organic paper.
Being a gifted and versatile artist, she has been active for many years in various fields, including graphic, product and interior design. Moreover, she has also been active in the gastronomy sector for which she has developed her art education program, including branding.
In spring of 2017, Yuliia has opened the Cellular Practice art project at the Invogue gallery in Odesa. Since then she has taken part in the Kyiv Art Week and in the Gogol Festival where she has performed with the sculpture Cage.
Apart from this, Yuliia has also founded the Yalanzhi gallery in Odesa, along with the unique educational project Yalanzhi Education.
In March 2018, her works adorned the newly built large Urban Music Hall in the city of Odesa.
Yuliia is a constant participant in the international regular exhibition Maison&Object in Paris as well as in many other design exhibitions and competitions, such as KIff, Interior of the Year. Her creations can be admired in homes and public places throughout Ukraine and beyond.
Serhii Horban
Serhii was born in the city of Dnipro, in Eastern Ukraine. His studio – founded in 1992- is specialising in creative ceramics. His works were first exhibited in 1997.
Serhii works with clay from Donetsk deposits, known for its high sintering temperature. Objects made from this clay are unique and especially durable and frost-resistant. He uses ancient and “secret” technologies, applying wood-burning skills that result in fine, natural looking and lasting colour of artefacts, without the need of adding synthetic dyes. At the premises of his pottery, Serhii has built a park – a modern center of unique craft culture.
He is also proud of hosting Ukraine’s largest pottery kiln, built with his own hands and used for special large ceramic objects.
In 2010, he has represented national pottery in the Ukrainian pavilion at the EXPO World Exhibition in Shanghai.
Over more than 10 years, Serhii has been running a pottery school where enthusiasts of the ancient art can learn the basics of pottery artisanship.
In 2020, the workshop site has gained the national award for landscape design and architecture.
Portugal
Ana Cristina Mendes, CEARTE, Portugal
Ana Cristina Mendes holds a Law Degree from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, is a Postgraduate in Communications and media law by FDUC, with training in Public Management by INA, I.P. She has been with CEARTE – Professional Training Center for Crafts and Heritage since 1991 in the Training Department and as a Legal Advisor. She became Deputy Director of CEARTE in 2018 and was the general coordinator of the Vocational training department since 1998. Ana Cristina is also the Coordinator of the work team responsible for the design of Crafts training curricula integrated into the National Catalogue of Qualifications. She is a member of the work team of the National Legal certification system for the crafts sector and the National Sectorial Council for Qualification – Crafts, and Jewellery. She is co-author of the Study “The Sector of Craft Activities in Portugal”/ 2006: Chapter IV.
She has extensive experience in the preparation of training projects for applications for European Programs and the coordination and monitoring of transnational training projects. Ana Cristina is also the author of several articles and communications within the thematic Crafts and Vocational Training.
Marta Barros
Marta Barros was born in Porto and lived there until she was 18, when she moved to Lisbon to study Media. She worked more than 9 years as a TV producer and was happy, but the experience of manual work would awaken her interest in seeing the world beyond the screens.
She did a macramé workshop in 2016, the year in which she also created her handcraft project for decoration. Today, Marta is happy to see her brand – TEX MB – growing and being her main occupation.

Ceramicist based in St Albans, took part in Hothouse nee Crafting Business 2020. Pratima originally trained as a scientist. She started studying at various universities through their open study programmes and started making art, primarily in mixed media. Through her ongoing experimentation she has developed a personalised style of creating distinctive forms of composition, harmony and mood. The artefacts that frequently appear in her work are collected during her frequent travels throughout India, as she tries to encapsulate all aspects of the country including the magnificent sculptures, stunning textures, vibrant colours and vitality of the subjects.

Working across the visual arts, artists Max Bainbridge and Abigail Booth draw upon a background in painting and sculpture, whilst looking towards a newly developed language of craft. They work independently to produce installations that form dialogues between landscape, material and process as they navigate the changing context of the maker. Working with raw materials sourced directly from evolving rural and urban landscapes, they explore identity and place through expanded material histories and hand-work.
